Janet Burman rejects GOP leader's advice to attack Rachel May in NY Senate race
Republican Janet Burman says she has rejected advice from party leaders who want her to run a negative campaign against Democrat Rachel May in the election for New York's 53rd Senate District.
Republicans see a rare opening to recapture the seat for the first time in 14 years after May's upset of state Sen. Dave Valesky, D-Oneida, in the Sept. 13 Democratic primary election, Burman said.
But Burman said GOP leaders, including Onondaga County Republican Chairman Tom Dadey, have told her that path must include a negative campaign that aggressively attacks May.
"There are certain principles I am going to stick to, and one of those is that I'm not going to go negative," Burman said in an interview.
